Haxmons: Desert Blast - A Team with Sand Stream
« on: July 14, 2013, 10:39:50 am »
Haxmons

Haxmons adds a new twist to the OU meta-game with constant crits, guaranteed secondary effects, and removal of low accuracy moves. However, one thing that remains is the constant weather war. This team takes a look at the sandy side of Haxmons.

Construction:

Tyranitar was the base of the team, being the best option for setting up sandstorm.

Scizor was a logical next choice, having immunity to sandstorm and a strong move pool.

Lucario, the ubiquitous haxmon, had resistance to sand and a large group of priority moves.

Dugtrio was useful for dispatching a number of different Pokemon, including other weather set-ups, ghost-types, psychic-types, and even the occasional electric-type.

Omastar was a good defensive Pokemon due to Shell Armor blocking critical hits. It also add some needed type coverage to the team.

Mismagius came out of trial and error. It covered some extra holes in the team and blocked Lucario.

In-Depth:

Tyranitar

@ Focus Sash
Trait: Sand Stream
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 SDef
Adamant Nature
- Crunch
- Stealth Rock
- Earthquake
- Fire Punch

Tyranitar, despite being slow by haxmon standards, has a solid niche to fill beyond being a simple Sand Streamer. Crunch is a strong STAB move that can dispatch many switch-ins. Unfortunately, strong physical rock-type moves are non-existent in haxmons, so I gave Tyranitar Stealth Rock as an option for entry hazard set-up. Stealth Rock has deadly potential in haxmons, killing Shedinja and breaking Focus Sash. Earthquake deals a nasty blow to annoyances like Ninetails. Fire Punch provides a nice cure-all for many common switch-ins such as Scizor and Lucario.

Scizor

@ Choice Band
Trait: Technician
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spd
Adamant Nature
- U-turn
- Bullet Punch
- Pursuit
- Superpower

Scizor uses it's fist of justice to take out threatening foes. Bullet Punch blasts holes in non-defensive Pokemon. It can take out many speed boosted Pokemon that would otherwise be a serious threat. Other moves are there for rare coverage needs. It is unfortunately ineffective against Armor Pokemon such as Omastar and Torterra. If Tyranitar is gone and sandstorm isn't up (which is probably a sign of impending doom anyways), it also is threatened by Shedinja.

Lucario

@ Focus Sash
Trait: Inner Focus
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SAtk / 252 Spd
Hasty Nature
- ExtremeSpeed
- Dark Pulse
- Bullet Punch
- Vacuum Wave

Lucario is the staple of this team. Extremespeed's +2 priority 80 BP offers a nice multi-purpose strike that can take out many fast attackers. Dark Pulse exists for coverage and flinch-blocking slower Pokemon. This is especially useful for dealing with annoying Armor Pokemon. Vacuum Wave adds coverage and the ability to strike other Lucario. Bullet Punch keeps Lucario from being blocked by a fast Ghost-Type. Lucario's major problem is Scizor and various priority or ultra-fast Pokemon.

Dugtrio

@ Focus Sash
Trait: Arena Trap
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spd
Jolly Nature
- Earthquake
- Sucker Punch
- Aerial Ace
- Headbutt

Dugtrio is uses a combination of Arena Trap and deadly force to remove weather opponents. Ninetails can usually be outspeeded by Dugtrio, but you have to watch out for Choice Scarf. Sucker Punch offers priority coverage against obnoxious flinchers. Headbutt gives Dugtrio an option for stopping slower Pokemon. Because Lucario often carries focus sash and Extremespeed, Dugtrio can't really switch in on it. The main threat to Dugtrio is Scizor due to a lack of coverage moves.

Omastar

@ Leftovers
Trait: Shell Armor
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SDef
Bold Nature
- Earth Power
- Surf
- AncientPower
- Ice Beam

Omastar is just a master. It's bulk coupled with its crit-cancelling Shell Armor allows it to take hits from most physical attackers, notably Scizor. Sandstorm also gives it a bit of a boost in Special Defense. Solarbeam is essentially unusable in sandstorm and other grass moves are uncommon, so Omastar is generally safe from its double weakness. It can use AncientPower to deal damage and boost its stats repeatedly. The one weakness of Omastar is its lack of speed. Flinchers can stall out Omastar and whittle away its HP. However, Omastar's Bulk and Leftovers can let it stall out a lot of Flinchers, leaving Dark Pulse as the main threat, so it may be wise to take out Dark Pulse users before using Omastar.

Mismagius

@ Choice Scarf
Trait: Levitate
EVs: 252 Spd / 252 SAtk / 4 HP
Timid Nature
- Shadow Ball
- Thunderbolt
- Ominous Wind
- Hidden Power [Ice]

Mismagius is the final piece of the team. It is mainly used for covering loose ends. It can counter Lucario with a paralyzing Thunderbolt. HP Ice kills Torterra that have repeatedly plagued this team. Shadow Ball is just there as a STAB option if the situation arises. Dark Pulse has great utility as a flinching move. A big threat to Mismagius is Scizor. If Scizor comes in, Mismagius has to come out, lest a Bullet Punch crush its brittle body. Mismagius really helps to seal any cracks in the coverage of the team.

Overall, this team seems pretty good. It wins many battles and tournaments. It wins more than it loses, which is good. The key strategy is using sandstorm to block opposing weather. Beyond that the team can adapt well to opponents.

The Biggest thing I noticed while looking through the team is the lacking of Dark Pulse on Mismagius, I strongly let you consider it as it has great utility and can win many games for you

Also this team is very weak to Triple Strategy Dragonite (Iron Head/Darkpulse or Agility/ExtremeSpeed/Ice Punch, as it can set up on many mons, on average, this team is very weak to rain and there is no Scald switch in so I really advise you to get this team a bit better against rain

I replaced Ominous Wind with Dark Pulse. I might switch Mismagius with Gengar.

I saw that this team is really weak to Grass and Water attacks, you got almost now save switch ins and Especially Aqua Jet can destroy you
